This book may be one of the most important and unique books you will ever read. It is important because it sets out to answer the question, "How can I know for sure I am truly saved?” It is unique in the fact that it does not set out to teach you how to become saved; it explains how to know you really are. I believe this information makes this book vitally important.
Now, the above question is sometimes communicated differently, as some may ask, “How can I know for sure I will go to heaven when I die?” or “Will I live with God forever?” or “What will happen to me when I die?” The questions are basically the same; it is the answer to those questions that people are looking for. The issue is how can I know, with certainty, I will be ok. So, I am taking the liberty in assuming the reader has, at a bare minimum, made a profession of faith in Jesus as his or her Savior and Lord and he or she believes their salvation is secure. But is your salvation really secure? The purpose of this book is to help you answer that one important question.
The only way to have peace of mind about the answer to our question is to have a correct knowledge of another book, which is by far the most important and unique book you will ever read. That book is the Bible. Throughout its pages, God is informing the reader of his or her need to find the right answer to their questions. Our search for answers is of extreme importance to God too and because it is, He has supplied the answers we are looking for. In fact, God has provided us with a comprehensive “final exam” to our knowledge of our true salvation in one of His New Testament books contained in His Word. Since an exam is an educational assessment intended to measure one’s knowledge, skill, aptitude, or beliefs, God is once again demonstrating His great concern for us by “testing” all of those characteristics in us that we may know exactly where we stand with God now so we can know what we may expect when we stand before Him in the future. Therefore, God’s final exam is meant to reveal to us where we truly stand with Him. He provides the educational resources to increase our knowledge, skills, aptitudes, and beliefs; He also offers us the final exam to see if we’re deficient in any of them.
God’s comprehensive final exam is found in the book of First John. In the book that you are now reading, I have provided a verse by verse commentary to help fully understand and hopefully pass the exam with a high score that would ultimately glorify Jesus.
