Hold Your Child Accountable
Merriam-Webster defines accountable as “subject to give an account; capable of being explained.” When it comes to keeping our children accountable, we must look beyond the surface of a child’s decision. One must understand that though we cannot control every decision made by our children, there are preventative measures that we can take as the village to counteract them with future decisions. You must take the initiative to ask what and why. What caused that child to act against what was directed to him or her? Why did that child decide to make that choice over an alternative? This takes looking deeper into the minds, the thought processes, of our children. No, I am not suggesting we become mind readers and try to force our children into telling us every decision-making strategy they choose. Holding children accountable for their actions takes time and patience. How we respond to a child’s decision matters in the moment. If you know a child has been told by her parent not to do a certain act and you witness the child doing the prohibited act, then it becomes your assignment to correct her.
As stated before, children are only knowledgeable to the degree of their exposure. So when there is a situation that is approached as questionable to the child who performed it, we must ask him why. Why did he make the decision to pursue that thought? The reason we ask why is to get the child thinking about his choices. And when approached with the same situation, he will remember the outcome or the thought process of his previous action and hopefully will not repeat the action. Now this does not just follow the accountability of the negative actions but the positive as well. Accountable means “subject to give an account; capable of being explained.” Therefore, in holding our children accountable, we are not only holding them responsible for their wrong actions but the right ones as well.

About the Author
Hernika McCoy Campbell, EdM, earned an elementary education degree from Southern University and A&M College of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a master’s degree of education in educational leadership from Concordia University, Portland, Oregon. In her collegiate years, she grew a relationship with the Lord and became involved in campus ministries. Campbell worked as a second-grade teacher and now serves as youth pastor at Kingdom Connection Church of Houma.
