But when God told me to let Him have the instrument or control panel, I got a little uneasy in my flesh. I said to God “Lord, I am high up in this airplane, are you sure you know what you are doing?” Now of course we know God knows what he’s doing at ALL times. However, my flesh had a hard time believing that especially when I felt I was in full control of the altitude I was flying through.
Proverbs 19:21 says, “that many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.” (English Standard Version) ESV
In my mind, I thought “Lord, it’s easy to trust you when I haven’t left earth. It is easy to trust you when I have concrete underneath my feet. However, high up in this airplane, where my flesh really needs to have full control, it’s hard for me to relinquish the panel controls to you.
And God just simply said “Trust me.”
What I have noticed in the course of giving God full control is this: The first several flights I admittedly said “No God. I got this.” During this time, I also admit that either I crashed the plane or I damaged the plane by not listening and trusting God. But little by little, I slowly handed over the control panels in my life and my faith and trust was strength in Him.
Metaphorically speaking, it is easy to trust God when we are on the ground and when we have stability and gravity under our feet. But it can be difficult to trust God when we are in midair and there’s the uncertainty of the unknown; especially when we are facing a major decision.
I remember I was driving on the highway alone, cruising in my vehicle. The evening was changing to nightfall and it eventually turned to darkness quickly. In the far distance, I saw a car who had just put on its emergency lights and pulled over to the side of the road. I prayed and asked God if I should help. I try to err on the side of caution when it comes to helping someone at night especially when my own night vision is not 20/20. I kept asking God “ARE YOU SURE? ARE YOU SURE I will be safe?” I heard God say “yes.” He simply said “yes.” And because I knew God’s voice, I pulled over. Now, my body was shaking in fear (although my spirit had peace) because I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know how many people were in the car when I pulled up? I didn’t know if this was an ambush of some sort. But again, I recognized God’s voice and obeyed. I got out of my car and cautiously walked to the driver’s side door. A lady partially rolled down her window and I asked her if she needed assistance. She said no, she was fine and that help was on the way. God told me when I eventually pulled away, that He was testing me to see if I would obey his voice…even in a situation that may be scary for me. My faith was strengthened from that test. And over time, it became easier and easier to know and to trust His voice. The key is knowing God’s voice! The blessing is in the obeying part.
Let God be in authority over your control panels. Let Him be the controller of your plane. Let God be in control of your thoughts, your decisions, and the direction you take in life.
Let God guide your steps. He knows the way. Soar a little higher in Him. God can see what we cannot see. He knows your destiny. We have purpose in Christ. He’s in control of all the modules in my life now. He steers my life, my journey, and my destination. When I allow God to be God in my life, things turn out better than expected. I reach His destination for my life. I reach His will for my life. I reach His purpose for my life.
Sometimes we only see what the radar on the control panel registers to us. Sometimes we only hear what the weatherman has told us. The weatherman sees the weather shifting and changing ahead of us. But God sees more.
Go higher! Take the limits off of God.
Sometimes in our attempt to achieve our goals, we may come up short because we are not reaching high enough. When God says “Go higher” we need to trust God, and allow Him to guide us to higher heights, believing that God can do the impossible. Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” (New International Version) NIV
One of the hardest things to do is to give up the control and allow God to steer us into our destiny. We sit in the cockpit with limited knowledge. We know how to take off on the runway with our limited knowledge. We know how to keep the plane at an altitude that is safe with our limited knowledge.
However, when God says “come up a little higher spiritually” we panic and think “but what if something goes wrong? What if we crash because we went higher than the manual told us to?” When we have heard the voice of God succinctly, we can trust that we will not fail. Other people have failed because they didn’t go higher in their business, in their education, in their ministry. They failed to extend themselves to see the manifestation of what God can do in and through them. They failed to see the mighty power of God by not reaching the top of the mountain.
