As a first and second grader in Samoa, I remember reading books with pictures of mountains with snow, trees with beautiful colors in the fall, children riding their bikes, and beautiful big houses with cars in the driveways. The people were all happy with laughter or smiles on their faces. It was so beautiful to me; but I never wished that I could be there wherever that was. To me, they were just books with pictures to help us learn how to read in English. In my mind it was a whole different civilization with different people, not something that I would ever experience. Part of it was because I didn’t know any better, and part of it was because we didn’t have any car or bikes. And it didn’t seem real to see kids that were always happy all the time. Well, I was so wrong. Not only have I been living here in America for over fifty years, but I’ve also owned bikes and a big house with a car and truck in the driveway. I’ve skied on mountains covered with snow; I’ve walked and driven under colorful trees in the fall. I’ve experienced all four seasons. I have also traveled to other countries like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. The reality is not so much different. The truth is, most, if not all of us, no matter where we live, whether we believe in God or not, face problems and difficulties in life. At this point in my life, it’s hard to believe that I’m not in a mental institution, or dead. I want to share my story first and foremost not only to honor and give Him the glory, but also to tell people about His love and grace. Second, there may be someone struggling with similar problems who can relate to what I have been through. Last but not least, I want to leave a legacy for my family, especially my wife, children, grandchildren, and siblings. I hope you will be blessed by the grace of God.

A beautiful island in the South Pacific and a Christian home should be an ideal place for anyone to begin their life’s journey. But instead, Pinati’s childhood memories are filled with physical abuse, especially between the ages of five and ten. He still has a scar from a knife that stuck in his arm; he could not eat regular food for two weeks from a hit on his mouth; and he was beaten with a board in front of the whole school assembly as a second grader. As an adult, he experienced a painful divorce, death of his only son at age 20, death of his wife of 18 years, a drive-by shooting in San Francisco, and a street mob in the Philippines. With a pacemaker, a kidney transplant, eight stents in his heart, and a daily dose of 23 pills, he believes he’s still going because of God’s love and grace. His story is for God’s glory.
About the Author
Pinati Pasi was the fourth of eleven children. His father was a pastor, and his mother was a housewife and a very stern and strict disciplinarian. He was born and grew up in the Samoan Islands, then moved to Hawaii at age 14. After graduating from Farrington High School in 1974, he joined the Navy where he served onboard two aircraft carriers. He got married in 1979 just before he was honorably discharged from the Navy. His higher education included two and a half years in Loma Linda University and Riverside City College, and a year in the California Paramedical and Technical College all in Southern California. Besides a certificate for ambulance transport from San Francisco and a CNA certificate from Columbia Gorge City College in The Dalles, Oregon, he believes his highest education was provided by The School of Hard Knocks.
