HELPS FOR MAINTAINING PRIVATE DEVOTIONS
Meaning: Maintaining private or personal devotions has to do with the cultivation, by the means of personal prayer and Bible study, of increased love and loyalty to God.
I. The need for personal devotion
A. Apparent from Biblical commands: Colossians 3:16; II Timothy 2:15; II Peter 3:18
B. Apparent from Biblical illustrations: Enoch in Genesis 5:22, Isaac in Genesis 24:63, Joshua in Joshua 1:8, David in Psalm 119:2, and Jesus in Mark 1:35.
II. The time of personal devotions
Scripture does not specify an exact time for personal devotions, only that both day and night are seasonable for meditation.
A. The Psalmist said, “Early will I seek Thee” (Ps. 63:1; note: “early” may express urgency).
B. Isaac “went into the fields at eventide to meditate” (Gen. 24:63).
C. Godly believers, such as Spurgeon, Edwards, Hamm, and Mueller, would not so much as begin a day’s activities without spending sufficient time with the Master.
The important thing to remember about devotions is that it must be a time of solitude, when the door of care is shut; it is a time long enough to leave His sweet fragrance upon our hearts throughout our daily activity.
III. The objectives of personal devotions
A. To increase our love for Christ: if our private devotions do not result in this, then we are going through a mere mechanical exercise!
B. To know Christ’s leading (Ps. 119:105)
C. To rise above temptation (Ps. 119:11)
D. To grow in grace through spiritual exercise (I Tim. 4:8, 15)
CONCLUSION
Practice makes perfect; likewise, the Christian’s spiritual maturity rises only to the extent that he has been exercised in God’s Word (I Tim. 4:7).
