You might be familiar with the South African concept of ubuntu, a Bantu term that denotes the essential human virtues of compassion and humanity. It is the understanding that “a person is a person only through other people,” meaning, I am who I am because you are who you are and vice versa. And we are to live this out in such a way that ennobles—and does not demean—the freedom of others. For as long as one person is diminished or impeded in their humanity, so too are we. Conversely, when we are all elevated as the human family—with dignity not just reserved for one group of people—all of humanity benefits.
This is another day to truly consider our part in how we impede or enrich one another’s humanity in our everyday walk. How do we think about, speak about, judge another human being, though we might not truly know them? As the saying goes, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” Life has no favorites since we each will take a final breath before we leave this world.
Lord, help us to love in the only way love can be expressed—by respecting the dignity of every human being.

THE REVEREND DEBORAH A. LEE is an ordained Episcopal priest, spiritual director, and parish ministry leader. In addition to her Master of Divinity degree, she holds a Master of Arts degree in counseling and worked as a mental health therapist and educator. She joined forces with several non-profit social justice organizations in the United States and internationally, and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco.
