Chapter One addresses building on a solid foundation. If a house is built on bad ground, it will collapse because the ground is not strong enough to sustain the house. It does not matter how beautiful the house or how many rooms or bathrooms it has. The foundation is not secure, and the house will collapse. Many marriages collapse because their foundation is weak! When the bride and groom meet at the altar, they express their eternal love for one another. They want their marriage to be the exception to the rule. We will stay married forever! I believe they truly want that. However, marriage is not a fairy tale. Marriage is real life with real challenges. No amount of money, prestige or celebrity status can keep a marriage together. If the foundation in a marriage is weak, the marriage will collapse. If one did not inspect the ground and build a huge house on the land, millions of dollars would have been wasted because the house will eventually collapse. Therefore, please inspect your ground! Does he have a job? Does she argue with her mother all the time? What is his credit score? How much debt does she has? Couples don't even ask these questions because they are blinded by love. Don't be blinded by the glitter of love! Does he have a committed relationship with the Lord and shows fruit of that relationship? Is she a committed Christian and shows fruit found in Galatians 5:22. How is his ground, and how is your ground? Start your marriage on Godly principles!

About the Author
Norman Bishop has been a marriage advisor and marriage counselor for forty years. He earned a master’s degree from Liberty University in pastoral counseling and has trained church leaders from his home church and church leaders from twenty-five other churches. Bishop serves as an assistant pastor and as an elder to give guidance to those with questions or personal conflicts. He and his wife have been married forty years and have three adult children.
