CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The King’s Parade
1 Samuel 18:6-9
6 As they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music. 7 The women sang to one another as they played, and said,
“Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
8 Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have credited David with ten thousands, and they have only credited me with thousands. What can he have more but the kingdom?” 9 Saul watched David from that day and forward.
Psalm 138
By David.
I will give you thanks with my whole heart. Before the [heavenly beings] gods, I will sing praises to you. 2 I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your Name for your loving kindness and for your truth; for you have exalted your Name and your Word above all.
3 In the day that I called, you answered me. You encouraged me with strength in my soul. 4 All the kings of the earth will give you thanks, [Lord] Yahweh, for they have heard the words of your mouth. 5 Yes, they will sing of the ways of [the Lord] Yahweh, for [the Lord’s] Yahweh’s glory is great! 6 For though [the Lord] Yahweh is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but he knows the proud from afar. 7 Though I walk in the middle of trouble, you will revive me. You will stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies. Your right hand will save me. 8 [The Lord] Yahweh will fulfill that which concerns me. Your loving kindness, [Lord] Yahweh, endures forever. Don’t forsake the works of your own hands.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Unhinged
1 Samuel 18:10-11
[The day following the parade where the people sang David’s praise…] 10 On the next day, an evil spirit from God came mightily on Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. David played with his hand, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand; 11 and Saul threw the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” David escaped from his presence twice.
Psalm 121
A Song of Ascents.
I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from [the Lord] Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 [The Lord] Yahweh is your keeper. [The Lord] Yahweh is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 [The Lord] Yahweh will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 [The Lord] Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Rising and Falling
1 Samuel 18:12-16
12 Saul was afraid of David, because [the Lord] Yahweh was with him, and had departed from Saul. 13 Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. 14 David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and [the Lord] Yahweh was with him. 15 When Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he stood in awe of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.
Psalm 112
[Hallelujah!] Praise Yah! Blessed is the man who fears [the Lord] Yahweh, who delights greatly in his commandments. 2 His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house. His righteousness endures forever. 4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous. 5 It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He will maintain his cause in judgment. 6 For he will never be shaken. The righteous will be remembered forever. 7 He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in [the Lord] Yahweh. 8 His heart is established. He will not be afraid in the end when he sees his adversaries. 9 He has dispersed, he has given to the poor. His righteousness endures forever. His horn will be exalted with honor. 10 The wicked will see it, and be grieved. He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away. The desire of the wicked will perish.
CHAPTER NINETEEN
Broken Promise
1 Samuel 18:17-19
17 Saul said to David, “Behold, my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you as wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight [the Lord’s] Yahweh’s battles.” For Saul said, “Don’t let my hand be on him, but let the hand of the Philistines be on him.” 18 David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” 19 But at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as wife.
Psalm 128
A Song of Ascents.
Blessed is everyone who fears [the Lord] Yahweh, who walks in his ways. 2 For you will eat the labor of your hands. You will be happy, and it will be well with you. 3 Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house, your children like olive shoots around your table. 4 Behold, this is how the man who fears [the Lord] Yahweh is blessed. 5 May [the Lord] Yahweh bless you out of Zion, and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
6 Yes, may you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel.
