The Empathy Lesson

Miss Sheldon led the children through the hallway and into the lunchroom as Miss Hildred watched from the rear. As the children were eating, Miss Hildred could see Carla and Jo both smiling at Idania who was seated at the other end of the same table next to Brooke, which seemed to make Idania angry.
“Miss Hillard, may I go to the bathroom?” asked Idania.
“It’s Miss Hil-dred sweetie, and yes, you may go.” said Miss Hildred.
“I don’t mind showing her where it is.” said Jo quickly before Brooke could ask to go.
“Come on Idania, I’ll show you the way.” said Jo.
As the girls walked together in the hallway, Jo began to jog slowly ahead leaving Idania behind, and almost losing her as she quickly turned a corner leading to the bathroom. Idania was able to walk fast enough to catch up and see Jo entering the bathroom just before the self-closing door finished closing. When she entered, somehow Carla was already there with Jo.
“What’s the matter slow poke, you can’t keep up? Do you have jet lag coming from your poor little country?” taunted Jo. After Carla pushed Idania into the stall, almost causing her to stumble, she yelled, “Hurry up in there, we need to finish our food!”
“Yeah, and just so you know, there’s more than one way to this bathroom. I took you the longer way. We want you to know that we don’t like all of you Spanish people coming here!” sneered Jo.
“Ha! You thought your weak little feet hurt me on the play-ground? You stay away from Brooke, or we’ll make you look more silly than we did today on the playground!” said Carla in a mean tone that was louder than the flushing toilet. Idania timidly exited the stall to wash her hands.
While Idania was trying to dry her hands and her tears, Jo and Carla hurried out of the bathroom, speed walking down the hallway to frustrate Idania. They entered the cafeteria without Idania.
