“The Oars Of Our Lives” is written for those individuals who are facing challenges in life and are searching for answers. It is the result of first-hand experience and counseling over many years to provide a consequential roadmap to enable individuals to navigate the challenges in life through making the right Christ honoring choices. And through the prism of “oars” the reader is equipped to make the right choice.
Life is defined by the choices we make, and choices are at the core of who we are and what we value as important. The challenge then, is to define ours. Scripture says, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15, NKJV). Throughout history, the church and society has struggled with the subject of “choices.” The Bible is replete with references, directly and indirectly to the “oars” of life. As a result, we are confronted daily with a multitude of what I choose to call “oars” of our lives, because oars symbolically are representative of the direction our life will follow, and the content of our character.
We will have to choose between two kinds of wisdom. We cannot be, as James tells us, be of two minds about the direction of our lives. (James 1:8, NKJV). Society, inside and outside the church, is made up of broken lives of people who are hurting, and in need of someone to come alongside and be a shepherd, sharing Christ, making them complete in Him. Christs’ desire is to take away the “Oh!” or “Ouch” and supercharge their lives spiritually and emotionally whereby they can enjoy an active Christlike lifestyle, saying “Goodbye” to discomfort, depression, discouragement, defeat, and “Hello” to a brand new you.
They no longer need to suffer in silence. And unleashing the amazing fire power of the Holy Spirit into their lives they will find peace and joy, defeating the joy killing power and entanglement of the world and Satan. “He who pulls on the oars doesn’t have time to rock the boat.” (Source: unknown).
Picture with me an individual sitting motionless in a rowboat, as if in deep thought, staring off into the distance, going nowhere. Are they contemplating their next move? Would their choice be to use both oars and row straight ahead oar pedal with one oar only, and therefore row in circles?
Choices! Choices are decisions all of us must make, but at times, have wished we didn’t have to make. We would rather avoid them if possible. “If you are pedaling with the right oars, you will hear the Masters’ (Christ) voice and know you have made the right choice.” (drdlksr) And as you pull on the oars, choices will become easier and clearer. You won’t rock the boat with doubt, regret, or uncertainty; rather, you will have calm seas ahead as you sail towards your destination, your haven of rest heavens shore. Christ is your source of faith, hope, and victory over life’s challenges.
We will have to choose between that which will draw us closer to the Lord, oar, that which will draw us closer to the world. You may be struggling to find answers to the conflicts in your life, oar to make the right decisions about your future. To choose Christ, making Him the guiding light in your life will enable you to row through the rough seas in life, and towards your destination. You won’t have time to rock the boat because you and Christ will be pulling on the oars in unison. Christ will be the unseen power, the propelling force in your life.
The manner, in which you use your oars, will determine the direction your boat will carry you through troubling waters of life, oar, the calm seas with Christ at the helm. But first you must make a choice as to your destination. Because you will face a headwind, oar, tail wind. In Mark 6, we read, “Then He (Christ) climbed into the boat with them (disciples), and the wind died down.
You have the option to choose to accept Christs invitation and allow Him to join you in your boat, as in your life. oar, reject Christ. It is a choice we all must make. No one is exempt. Christ called out to the disciples, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Mark 6: 51, NIV). All who accept Christ will win and wear the crown of righteousness. Don’t be afraid. Christ will meet you where you are.
You are about to take a journey through some areas you are not familiar with. We know that through communicating with Christ, great things will take place in our lives. As you shed the liability of pieces [sin, hurt, depression, aimless life] of your life, Christ will mold the very best pieces of your lives into a new creation.
The following fifty “oars” are words or terms which I am confident are familiar to you They may be pronounced the same, often spelled the same, but have very different meaning, they may be spelled different, but pronounced the same, but each with different meaning. You will find the terms contrasted and defined, so that you may more easily understand each term.
So, welcome to this journey as we explore ways, which prayerfully, will be helpful to you, and lead you to achieving the abundant life Christ has to offer. Think boldly and Christ will reward you boldly.

About the Author
David L. Kjosa Sr. draws on his many years of experience in the ministry as a Chaplain in the United States Army. Feeling inadequate as a young man and seemingly lacking the ability to tackle the challenge to rise to the divine mandate he was being called to fulfill, he says he found the strength and focus/hope in these powerful life changing words:
“I didn’t know that I couldn’t and so in faith I stepped out and did the impossible, changing impossibilities into possibilities, doors opened, and I walked through them fulfilling my divine mandate and God blessed me beyond anything I could have ever imagined.”
