Just Tryin' To Be A Blessing

Mildred and Friends
During my youth, I spent a lot of time with my grandma. I can only define that experience as grand. We had plenty to do, and our efforts were time well spent.
She taught me a lot over of the years, and she had quite a collection of friends and family members. One of those people was a lady named Mildred.
The first time I met Mildred, she was on the phone. I know what you’re thinking—I must be mistaken! You can’t meet anyone on the phone.
Yes, you can because I did. She was on the phone talking with a total stranger on what was then known as a party line. Several families shared the same phone line. If someone was using it, you could not, and you could hear every spoken word. With all due respect, it seemed she was on the phone all day every day.
When I told my grandma we couldn’t use the phone because someone was using it, she would simply say, “It’s probably Mildred. Just tell her I need to call someone shortly.”
Back to the phone I went, and I was trying to be tactful I suppose. I simply told her my grandma needed to use the phone, and from that very moment we were off to the races.
Her focus had turned to me. Now Mildred could talk a mile a minute, yet in her very gracious way, she did a complete interview with me over the phone right then. I truly don’t recall what happened to the other person who was originally on the call.
From that day on, our friendship was permanent. She was always there, particularly if you needed to use the phone.
I finally got to meet her face to face, and I will let you paint your own picture. I will tell you she was a lady you could always count on and one who counted on our family as well. We did whatever it took to meet her needs, and she did the same for us for well over twenty years.
The psalmist David in Psalm 139 describes his relationship with God as one who was always there as well. Hopefully, we have the same type of personal relationship with the Father. If not, we can have. Here are his words.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. (Psalm 139:7–12)
I hope that you have a friend like Mildred, one who can always brighten your day, one with whom you can sit down and talk, and one who truly enjoys your company. This is the type of person you can always count on and make memories with. Remember, “a friend loveth at all times” (Proverbs 17:17).
