David rounded the tunnel curve and moved quickly to Noelle. She explained there was an opening in the tunnel ceiling with sunlight shining through just ahead. She added there weren’t any rocks that would enable her to check for sounds or sights to indicate danger.
“I’m glad you stopped everyone back behind the curve. There are at least three openings before we get to the forest. I just don’t remember how close they are together.” David and Noelle walked quietly toward the opening. Once they reached it, he signaled he would boost her up so she could check things.
“Don’t put you head completely through the hole; only go to eye-level and see if you can hear anything. Of course, if you see anything that might be human, drop back down. We’ll have to wait until dark if there is any indication of people outside.” He bent down enough for Noelle to slip her legs over his shoulders before he straightened up. Even though they were still in the darkness, she silently drew her dagger from its sheath just in case. David carefully eased her toward the opening. Just before reaching its edge, a shadow crossed and blocked the sunlight. They both froze. Had their whispers been heard?

About the Author
A military brat, Donna Fielding has lived in both Europe and the Far East. Living on military posts or bases is similar to living in a totalitarian society. While she worked in many positions, teaching Sunday school, English and History were always her first loves. An avid reader, her favorite genres are the Bible, science fiction and dystopian novels. She has lived long enough to see many aspects of Orwell’s 1984 and Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 appear in society. Mrs. Fielding has dual degrees in English and History from Texas A&M University and lives in south central Texas with her husband and pets.
