When fictitious characters are interwoven into real-life scenarios, it creates an opportunity to identify with the different aspects of the various characters. You may or may not be able to relate to certain aspects of a particular character, but as you journey through the story, you may find yourself relating to specific aspects of more than one character, as well as not being able to identify with other aspects of their character or response to other characters. You may find yourself understanding the perspective of Woolgathering while, at other times, identifying more with Crestfallen. The point of view of Polestar may also identify how you feel at times. If this happens to you as you journey through Open Letters, then you are on the right journey. Open Letters is not a journey of three singular perspectives, but a journey of engaging various perspectives as we continue our pursuit of resolution. Open yourself up to be encouraged and challenged and maybe even frustrated at times. However, the journey will give you an opportunity to see things in a way that you may have already assumed or that you might not have seen previously. Prepare yourself for the destination to which this journey will take you. ---------------------- Crestfallen and Woolgathering began to drift apart. Their marriage carried the weight of years of hunger and fulfillment that could not be met. They loved their children, but frigid waters began to separate them further and further over time. Roaming and drifting, solace was sought after elsewhere. Their friend, Polestar, began to carry the weight of their dissatisfaction as he so desired to see the icy waters melt. In the morning hours of one still night, he was awoken with a revelation of a new pasture in which Woolgathering had wandered. In the distress of helplessness, Polestar sought direction as to what to do and how to respond. Heavenly direction fell upon Polestar as he realized what he must do. He would pray for and write to Crestfallen and Woolgathering every day for an undetermined amount of time. He sought to embrace the heart of God, his Lord, as he reached out to them, loved them, and challenged them. Polestar called them open letters as they would be open before God and were given to Crestfallen and Woolgathering. The Lord, his God, revealed three things that must be communicated in every letter: the written word of God, Polestar’s love for Crestfallen and Woolgathering, and a challenge that could lead them toward reconciliation. What about you? Are you ready for this journey? The journey of Crestfallen and Woolgathering may be your journey. It may not be, but are you willing to take that chance? I cannot promise you where you will be at the end of this journey. That is up to you. However, the journey could change your life. It could change your marriage. Or it could leave you right back where you started at the beginning of your journey. That is your choice. However, wherever you end up at the end of this journey, you will not be the same. Come. Let’s begin with the first day!

One quiet morning, the spirit of God stirred Jeff Beck awake. The Lord told him, “Jeff, I want you to pray, fast, and write open letters to the married couple whose relationship is being challenged every day until I release your spirit from writing these letters. These letters are open before Me, each spouse, and yourself as you write them and send them.” Open Letters are words and a challenge to a couple in crisis, so that they can save their marriage. The letters are meant to be used as a tool to facilitate understanding and forgiveness, which can lead to the healing of marriages and even of past relationships. The letters are not meant to condemn or judge those who have been divorced or are on the road to divorce. Rather, they are geared to encourage readers to take an honest look at where they are, at their spouse, and how to move forward. These daily devotionals invite readers to take a journey with their eyes wide open, so that they will understand the ramifications of whatever decision they make. This devotional challenge does not tell couples what to do – it challenges them on their journey before deciding what path to take.
About the Author
Jeff Beck was a missionary in Singapore and Brazil for twenty-two years. As a pastor, church-planter, and professor in Biblical studies, he has a passion to see the lost found, the broken-hearted healed, and restoration flourish. Born in Mount Clemens, Michigan, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Southeastern University, a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
