“Don’t forget to use a cutting board when you slice the potatoes, Hannah,” admonished Mrs. Banks. “The pantry table barely survived the nicks from your onion chopping last Sunday.”
“Oh, mom,” protested Hannah. “The cutting board is too small for chopping.”
“Nonetheless, use the cutting board, Hannah,” said Mrs. Banks. “That table has seen its day, and we must take better care of it.”
Hannah reluctantly reached up to grasp once again the round knob to the right door of the double-doored pantry. Opening the door, Hannah pulled out the cutting board and placed it grudgingly on the old, wooden table below. She favored chopping on the table-top, not the board. She preferred reminiscing about the grooves in the table as she peeled, then chopped. It made the chore much more enjoyable.
