A new avalanche of discovery has been plummeting down over the world of science for several decades, and the avalanche is growing every time a discovery is made. Former atheist Hugh Ross, Ph.D., astrophysicist, claims that the evidence for one of these areas of discovery, fine-tuning, is growing exponentially each month. Discoveries in the operating systems of DNA are coming fast and furious and are staggering, and Stephen C. Meyer, Ph.D. philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge and former geophysicist and now of the Discovery Institute has said that Darwinian evolutionary theory is falling like a house of cards.
In a commentary article entitled "Panicked Evolutionists: The Stephen Meyer Controversy", you will read this telling paragraph. "The theory of evolution is a tottering house of ideological cards that is more about cherished mythology than honest intellectual endeavor. Evolutionists treat their cherished theory like a fragile object of veneration and worship -- and so it is. Panic is a sure sign of intellectual insecurity, and evolutionists have every reason to be insecure, for their theory is falling apart."
The Academy of Science is finally reaching a point where they must either jump on board or be buried alive. Dr. Michael J. Behe, biochemist, in his book Darwin Devolves, says "So what accounts for the stark purposiveness of the machinery of life? For over 150 years evolutionary biologists have thought they had an explanation--Darwin's theory of evolution. These days, however, as complexity piles upon complexity, a palpable restlessness has gripped the field."
Yet the teaching our students have in their science textbooks, all the way through graduate school, does not reflect these new findings. As an example, one of the textbook topics I will discuss in a later chapter is related to drawings that were found to be forged to support the theory of evolution, and the forgery was discovered over 100 years ago. Yet examples of these drawings remain in our textbooks to this day as supposed evidence for evolution. To facilitate my research for this book, I have purchased several science texts to see what is actually in them. I compiled a short list of topics to demonstrate that our textbooks do not reflect the current scientific information. The Discovery Institute did their own polling and found, "Scientific theories about the unguided evolution of life have led more people to reject belief in God (65%) than worries about suffering, disease, and death..." But just what is the connection? Can't we believe in Darwinian evolution and God at the same time? As I hope to show you, taking Darwinian evolution to its logical conclusion does undermine or even destroy one's belief in anything or anyone above and beyond the material, that is atoms and anything made of them.
