God tested Abraham faith again in Genesis chapter 22. “Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ and he said, ‘Here I am.’ Then He said, ‘take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’” (vv. 1-2)
Abraham did not ask, “Why” or “Are you sure, God?” The next morning, he set out with some young men of his household. When he saw the mountain, he told the young men to stay with their supplies. “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship and we will come back to you. (v. 22:5).
Abraham’s faith in God’s word was so firm that he believed, when he sacrificed Isaac, God would raise Isaac from the ashes. That is why he told the young men “we” will return.
Abraham prepared the altar and placed Isaac on the altar. When he raised the knife to kill his son, the angel of the Lord stopped him. God had provided a sacrifice – a ram was caught in a thicket behind him.
“By Myself I have sworn says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son – blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Genesis 22:16-18)
God’s response affirms His promises to multiply Abraham’s descendants through Isaac. The reason for God’s promise is recorded, “Because you have obeyed My voice" (v. 18). There is no doubt that his descendants should obey the voice of God.
Abraham set the pattern for all of his descendants to follow - faith in God’s promises and obedience to all God’s instructions. One can see that God loved Abraham and continues to love the children of Abraham through Isaac because God has never withdrawn or canceled His promises.
“Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be will with you.” (Jeremiah 7:23)
These words have been true for each Jew. God’s voice speaks from the holy Scriptures to the one who have faith in God’s promises. Almighty God wants to send His blessings of love to each Jew, who believes in Him and obeys His voice.
Moses
Abraham was told by God that his descendants would be in a strange land for four hundred years (Genesis 15:13). This happen when Jacob and his entire family moved to Egypt because of the famine while Joseph was ruler in Egypt. God had been with Joseph when he was taken to Egypt. God used him to prepare for the famine that was coming upon the land.
Moses’s parents were of the Levi tribe of Israel. It is fascinating to read how Pharaoh’s daughter found in infant Moses, then returned him to his own mother and paid her to raise her own son. When he was old enough, Moses returned to grow up in the palace, learning the language and all the traditions and details of Pharaoh’s kingdom.
Moses fled Egypt after he had slain an Egyptian in an attempt to help his brethren. When he realized the murder had been witnessed, he went to the land Midian. He married Zipporah, the daughter of Jethro. He cared for his father-in-law’s flock.
One day Moses came to the mountain of Horeb while leading the flock. He saw a bush which was on fire but was not burning up.
“I am the God of your father – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac; and the God of Jacob. . . . I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmaster, for I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey. (Exodus 3:6-8)
It was very obvious that Moses was talking with God because the bush did not burn up. God called Moses by name and told him to take off his sandals because he was standing on holy ground, the presence of Almighty God.
Moses initially felt he was inarticulate to carry out God’s instructions, but God promised to be with him. Next, he wanted to know what name to use to explain who sent him. God said, “I AM WHO I AM.” Exodus 3:14. Moses was not sure the elders of Israel would believe him so God had him through down his rod; it instantly became a snake. He picked up the snake, and it became a rod again. God had Moses put his hand in his bosom. When he pulled out, it had become leprous. He repeated the motion, and his hand was healthy again.
Then Moses said he was slow of speech and of tongue, so God said Aaron, his brother, could speak for Moses. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go, return to Egypt; for all the men who sought your life are dead.” (Exodus 4:19). This was God’s call for Moses to have faith and obey His instructions.
Moses was faithful to follow God’s directions for the next forty years. His was commitment to daily teach each generation God’s instruction.
