Most people think of strength in terms of power and might. But the strength that God is offering has many facets; it’s like a rope that is made up of many strands – Love, Peace, Faith, Hope and Wisdom. Individually these strands are amazing gifts that God freely gives to His children, but when they are woven all together and put into action, they provide an incredible strength that has the ability to withstand even the greatest of storms. The Strand of Love “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 My brother-in-law, Warren, was going through a serious battle with cancer as I was writing this chapter. I asked him what part of God’s strength he was leaning on to get him through this difficult journey. He said that the greatest comfort and strength that he was drawing from was knowing that he was truly loved, by God and by others. This was exemplified in a text that Warren received during this time from a friend who was in the Marine Corps with him – this message touched him deeply: “At the risk of losing a friend I want you to know I love you like a brother. Throughout history courageous men have fought battles, some with no help, they just got up each day and refused to surrender to who or whatever enemy they were facing. Many of them fought alone. The next time you feel like raising the white flag, look around at those who are doing their best to fight with you and support you. Go home, take off your sweater, dig out your suit of armor, buckle on your sword, and with weak and shaky hands, draw that puppy and stand ready to fight. Burn the white flag and the sweater. Inside let a battle cry come forth and just refuse to surrender. The generations that follow will remember and take heart at your courage. And whether you win or lose, everyone will know ‘there goes a warrior’. As a result, they will be stronger and love you for your courage and character the way that I do.” ~ Matt Owen Matt was describing the armor of God, but he was also saying words of encouragement to someone he loved. He made sure to let Warren know that his life mattered deeply to him and that he was going to stand beside him as he fought this battle.

About the Author
Linda Stender is a wife, mother of four, and grandmother of seven. After three and a half decades of serving her community as an occupational therapist, Linda pursued her love of writing and published her first book, The Trail Within, detailing the adventures she and her husband experienced while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Today, Linda and her husband continue to be thankful that they can enjoy the outdoors, spend time with family and, most importantly, share God’s love to all those around them.
