From the chapter on Christ:
The Gospels
As stated above, the primary use of Christ in the gospels is the Christ. Peter’s statement of faith in Luke 9:18 is that Jesus is “the Christ of God.” John clarifies this in John 1, when finding his brother Peter, Andrew said to him “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). In John 4:25 the woman at the well told Jesus "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ).” In John 7 we see debate among the Jews whether Jesus is the Christ.
Jesus refers to himself as Jesus Christ in John 17:3 when He was in the garden praying prior to His trial and crucifixion. He prayed “And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. “
Another phrase of interest is “Jesus who is called Christ.” This most notably is used by Pilate when talking to the crowd at Jesus’ trial. This would have really inflamed the Jews, and I have to wonder whether Pilate was doing this intentionally to goad the Jews, or whether he was doing this in ignorance.
Acts
The book of Acts picks up after the resurrection. The Apostles are now spreading the Gospel to the Jews and then on to the Gentiles. There is still talk about “the Christ,” but the disciples now are using “Jesus Christ” in reference to Jesus, particularly to the Jews. We see that the name of Christ has taken on power and significance. People are being baptized in the name of Christ. Miracles are being done in the name of Christ. Demons are being expelled in the name of Christ. Once Paul starts going out to the Gentiles we see him proving to them that Jesus is the Christ.
