This study guide/workbook is based on and meant to accompany the original book UNbroken: A True Story of Hope in Starting Over, by Wendy Baisley Roache. It lines up with the book chapter by chapter and was developed for both individual and group settings.
Both Wendy and co-author Susanne E. Johnson, take you on a journey through 121 thought- provoking questions and biblical references, providing new perspective and invaluable tools meant to inspire hope and healing. This study guide walks you through:

Introduction

UNbroken: A True Story of Hope in Starting Over is filled with God’s Word and wisdom to overcome shattered dreams, adversities, betrayal, disappointments, insecurities, and loss. This study guide was developed to be used alongside the book UNbroken to help individuals and small groups address real-life issues and aid in biblical healing discussions.



Right after Wendy lost everything, she wrote a note that said, “All I want in life is a cup of coffee, with a side of job and a little house for dessert.” Think about it: If you were to write your own note, what would it say?

Read the following scriptures. Then write down what they mean to you and how you can apply them in your own life.

As you work through this study guide, take note of what God is speaking to you through the story you are reading and through His Word.
Think about how each verse of Scripture applies to your circumstances.
Write down your thoughts and the verses that speak to your heart. Then, write the verses of Scripture on 3x5 index cards to review often, meditate on, and memorize.

Chapter 1
The Phone Call


Describe a time in your life when you had a strong sense that something was not right, a gut feeling, but you didn’t know what was causing it. What did you do about it?




What are some things you could do in the future when unsettling gut feelings arise?




Write about a time in your life when you kept secrets because of feelings of shame, fear or guilt. How did that make you feel?




How have you handled hopelessness and despair? How would you handle it differently now?



Make a list of people you would feel comfortable confiding in and going to for godly advice.

Chapter 2
Swept Away


When Lawrence disagreed with Wendy’s decision to let the children go on a trip with their father, he became violent and punched a hole in the wall. This was a sign that there was something much deeper going on. What signs or overwhelming feelings have you ignored that indicate there may be something wrong?




John 10:10 (NLT) says, The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. How might we be able to identify unhealthy signs?




Actions such as violence or anger can be used to intimidate, control and manipulate. In the future, how can you deal with these signs that there’s something deeper that needs to be addressed?




When Wendy’s father arrived, she shed all shame, humiliation, and embarrassment. She embraced the love of her father. Describe how this is like our heavenly Father’s love.
