Christian marriage is more than just two people of the opposite sex agreeing to live and raise a family together. In God's eyes, marriage is a holy, sacred covenant. Holy matrimony is a sacred act of togetherness, honored by and approved of God, and is to be a lifelong obligation (vow, covenant) a couple makes before God and to each another. It is to be entered into with reverence, discerning the divine will of God respective to the couple's calling to become "one flesh” in all ways possible.
If then marriage is a sacred act, “holy matrimony”, the primary goal is not to join a husband and wife together to simply make each other happy. Instead, the act of holy matrimony is sacrificial in nature and is a life-long partnership, a holy covenant, between the man, the woman, and their God as a presentation of self-sacrifice and as a spiritual act of divine worship, just as the Apostle Paul urges all believers by the mercies of God in Romans 12:1.
The primary key for a sacred/holy marriage is that the “Holy One” (Christ Jesus) be the centerpiece of the marital relationship. This truly is the foundational reality for biblical marriage and is the true source of health and happiness of which any married couple aspires to have with one-another. Choosing to place Christ foremost reflects how God blesses marriage, how he designs it, and how it serves to glorify His name – not solely for the couple’s own fulfillment and pleasure, but for His.

John C. Blackburn is the founder/proprietor of Soul Care Services, LLC, providing professional and confidential services: biblical counseling, life coaching, and compassionate pastoral care (www.soulcareservicesllc.org). Prior to SCS, John served nearly four decades in pastoral ministry in Ohio, Indiana, and Kansas. John is also cofounder of the Forge Initiative, Inc. (www.theforge.org). The Forge is a nonprofit faith-based organization providing a professional and relational environment specifically for men to facilitate authentic friendships, build godly character, provide leadership training, and offer biblical counseling and life coaching. This organization (established 2020) is the fulfillment of a dream/vision John has held since 2013. John has earned a bachelor of arts degree in biblical education (1984), a master of religious education degree (1995), and a doctor of religious studies (DRS) degree with an emphasis in pastoral care and counseling (2021). John is a board-certified professional counselor (BCPC) and professional certified life coach (PCLC) certified by the Board of Christian Professional and Pastoral Counselors of the American Association of Christian Counselors. John has further certification through the United Association of Christian Chaplains and Counselors, International. John and his wife, Beth, have been happily married since 1982.
