Nitzevet ran straight to the tower. It seemed to be calling her. She had been coming here for a long time. Longer than she could remember. She was five when her family began their frequent journeys to Bethlehem, only glimpses remained from her memory of that time, but the tower was always there. Built long before her people returned to the land, the Tower of Migdal Eder was to Nitzevet, a place where she most felt Yahweh’s presence. She could never explain it, even to herself. But it was simple, when she was a little girl, she felt peace here. Comfort and contentment were also among the feelings she most often felt when she was in this place. When she was younger and would wander the fields, she would end up here, lay down and take the most restful of naps. Looking back now she couldn’t explain why. Even at such a young age, Nitzevet knew that Yahweh was a merciful God. Her mother and grandparents had reminded her often what He had done for the people by bringing them out of Egypt with His mighty hand and parting the Red Sea so they could escape the evil pharaoh. Their God had led them to this very land that he had promised Abraham would be theirs. She knew that Yahweh had made a covenant with Moses as a representative of the People and given them statutes to live by. The covenant was a bilateral conditional covenant where Yahweh had promised that if His people lived by the statutes and feared the Lord they would prosper and be preserved. Yahweh said that righteousness would be theirs if they were careful to follow every one of the commands that He had given them. Just as Abraham had believed Yahweh and it was counted to him as righteousness, Nitzevet knew that her God loved her and cared that she believed as well. So she believed. In her twelve-year-old mind, it was uncomplicated. This is why she longed to be in His presence in this place, she could trust Him. The tower was located in Obed’s pastureland near Bethlehem, passed down to him from his father Boaz. Obed owned a considerable plot of land, where he raised thousands of sheep. This family was actually known by many far and wide for the quality of their sheep. Nitzevet found her favorite spot, a dip in the small patch of soft grass near the foot of the tower. Dew on the grass made her treasured retreat cool, even refreshing, especially on a hot day. She lay down, as if cradled in the hand of God and looked up at the tower. She loved to ponder life with her God.
