I’m bleeding

Eva wakes up to the sound of her quiet walls whimpering. Without having to open her eyes, she knows that it is her mother. She turns towards the wall and presses her hand against the cool midnight wall. The whimpering stops. Then begins again. Maybe her mother, for a moment, sensed that another soul was awake in the house, listening to her pain. Eva wants to comfort her, but this is not the first time that she could not console her mother’s pain. Not wanting to disappoint her mother or herself again, she just pats the whimpering wall back and forth–ever so gently. And soon falls asleep, into the dark night.
