“Mrs. Akanuma lived with her dog in the town of Miyako in Iwate Prefecture. On the afternoon of March 11, she was resting in her living room when the earthquake happened. Immediately 12-year-old Babu began to bark loudly and run around the room. It was not time for his afternoon walk yet, but she put the leash on him and went outside. Instead of going in the usual direction of their walk, Babu headed for a hill in the opposite direction. Whenever Mrs. Akanuma slowed down, Babu would look behind at her, as if he were saying, “Hurry! Hurry!” Pulling hard on the leash, Babu pulled her to the top of the hill. When she was finally able to rest on top of the hill, Mrs. Akanuma looked behind her and couldn’t believe her eyes. Her house and most of the trail that she had just walked with Babu were being swallowed up by an enormous tidal wave.
