We all knew that this moment was coming, but how do you ever really prepare for this sixty-second period, where you are waiting to see if he will take just one more breath? Then, he doesn’t…and He’s Gone!
What has happened here? No, let me repeat the question with just a little more emphasis; What has REALLY happened here?
From our vantage point, we who are standing by the bed and still have the breath of life in our lungs, we might simply say that he has “passed away”, or that he has “gone to be with Jesus”, or that he has “entered heaven.”
For us, a series of events now begins; we must call the hospice personnel; we must contact the preferred funeral home; we must make the phone calls to let loved ones know that he is no longer with us; travel arrangements must be made for out-of-town family members; and then we must start the dreaded process of preparing for a funeral or memorial service.
We all have our own verbal version of what we have just seen and experienced, and that story will be told repeatedly over the next few days. We all know the tasks that now lay before us as we start the process of moving through the next few days. For us, what has just transpired, means a gamut of emotions to deal with, responsibilities to shoulder, plans to make, and people to interact with.
For us, what has just happened means all these things and many more. But Wait! WHAT ABOUT HIM? What just happened from HIS vantage point? We watched; we saw; we felt; we grieve. But what about HIM? May I ask again with even more emphasis? What REALLY happened here from HIS point of view?

Unless Jesus comes to take us home to be with him in the Rapture, every one of us will one day take our final breath in this world and be gone. We understand what the survivors experience; however, what happens to the person who passed?
In Stepping Inside the Gate, author Dr. Danny L. Moody journeys through the scriptures, highlighting those passages that tell something about death and dying of the believer in Jesus Christ. He explores those passages and then discusses what they teach about what happens to the believer when he or she steps inside the gate.
Stepping Inside the Gate answers questions about what happens when a child of God departs this life through death, in what Moody calls the “miraculous moment.”
About the Author
Dr. Danny L. Moody has served as senior pastor of East Paris Baptist Church since 2019. A teacher, conference speaker, author, singer, and musician, he holds degrees from Arlington Baptist College, Moody Bible Institute, and Covington Theological Seminary. Moody has served as pastor of two other churches and as dean and president of a Christian university. He and Sherry have been married since 1978, have two children, a son-in-love, a daughter-in-love, and seven grandkids.
