Red Fox
Red fox cocks his head
to the side, then back,
then to the side again -
listening, keenly.
It is the dead of winter
in Yellowstone. The snow is
six feet deep. Red fox listens
as if his life depends on it.
Suddenly! he springs
high in the air.
His body arcs as he
nose dives into the snow.
His rear legs and tail are
all that are sticking out.
When he pulls back,
like a wine cork popped from a bottle,
a mouse is dangling
from his lips.
If I hadn’t witnessed it
I wouldn’t have believed,
what sensitive hearing
God gave red fox.

American author Lois Lewis has had a lifelong love of nature. She has pursued activities such as hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and cross-country skiing. In her poetry collections she writes about animals, birds, fish, insects, marine life, trees and flowers, as well as spiritual and social issues. She has lived in eleven states and Mexico. She currently resides in the foothills of the Ozarks.
