Winter Mountain
What’s she thinking -
that mountain looming,
near and far -
about another season
when pelting ice had not been born?
Aching
In craggy peaks and precipices,
longing for the warmth of summer -
for wildflower clothes
and hawks soaring on thermal drafts;
for squirrels frolicking on her bosom,
and lumbering bears
foraging plump-luscious
blackberries.
Or maybe –
she is meditating,
content to have her roots
warmed by the fire,
in the belly of the earth.

The sixty poems in this third collection of verse by poet Lois Lewis is a collage—a celebration of the spirit, of nature, and of life. Topics range from animals, birds, fish, and insects to flowers, trees, weather phenomena, and social issues such as genetic engineering, cryogenics, and World War Two.
About the Author
American author Lois Lewis has had a lifelong love of nature. She has pursued activities such as hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and cross-country skiing. In her poetry collections she writes about animals, birds, fish, insects, marine life, trees and flowers, as well as spiritual and social issues. She has lived in eleven states and Mexico. She currently resides in the foothills of the Ozarks.
