Providence and the Universe
The heavens are a special place that declare the glory of God: "The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples behold his glory." God purposely created the heavens in relationship with the earth and the people who walk upon it. (see Isaiah 42:5). All created entities including the heavens, the earth people are just that, created entities. All of these and every created category of creature and natural phenomenon are called upon to praise God in Psalm 148. All creation, therefore, works together for the purpose and praise of God almighty. The Bible speaks of the creation of the heavens and their changing over time to a new heaven (see Heb. 1:10-12; Isa. 65:17; Isa. 66:22 and Rev. 21:1).
We see in Jeremiah that God "stretched out the heavens" and were made possible by his understanding (see Jer. 10:12 and 51:15). The Psalms report that the "heavens declare his righteousness" (Ps. 97:6). If we look upon the heavens in a dark sky location and behold the thousands of stars one can imagine that you are in a cathedral made up of the entire universe. An accompanying feeling of worship, awe, and wonder is not hard to imagine in such a scenario. One of the primary feelings we have in this situation is an appreciation of the immense and unfathomable power necessary to create the universe. We see the majestic power of God and the implication that "nothing is too hard" for the almighty God (see Jeremiah 32:17). The heavens provide a ultimate standard of comparison for man to contemplate. We can only try to comprehend the comparisons made in the Bible. We see that heaven and earth shall pass away, but the smallest written component of the law will not pass away until all the law is fulfilled (see Matthew 5:18). In Isaiah we read that the heavens will vanish like a vapor but salvation will be forever and the accompanying deliverance will never end (see Isaiah 51:6). The universe presents a standard that only God can surpass in glory (see Psalm 113:4).
