Through a narrow back alley, I avoided the main crush of the cruel and the curious onlookers. I darted between two buildings which brought me out onto the main street. The cobblestone boulevard already had begun to fill up with bewildered spectators and passersby. The yellowish early morning sunlight streamed unto the streets, brightly lighting the path for this ghastly procession.
I pushed my way up through the crowd bordering the street and found a place from which to watch. I strained my neck to catch a glimpse of the prisoner. The crowds that lined the street to gawk, obstructed my view for the moment. The grinding machinery of execution was fully in motion. The Roman soldiers would see to it that no one would interfere with their assigned duty.
Then, to my right, the Roman Centurion, in charge of the execution procession, came into view from the midst of the throngs lining the street. He looked so magnificent – yet so menacing – dressed in the red Imperial Roman military uniform. His bright, red cape rippled majestically behind him as he marched slowing ahead of the procession. His shiny silver armor breastplate gleamed and sparkled in the early morning sunrays. His dazzling silver helmet with red crest gave him a regal and stately appearance. Weapons bristled from his leather waist belt, a sword and a dagger. And he carried an imposing, heavy club-like wooden stick about two feet long in his right hand, as he slowly marched. He gave no commands, but occasionally looked back to be sure the death march was proceeding as it should.
Behind the Centurion I saw more Roman soldiers, slowly striding along, dressed in red tunics and red, flowing capes. They also wore silver armor and helmets, each armed with menacing iron tipped spears. Their armor glistened, as well, in the morning sunlight. And their iron swords, strapped to their belts, proved that they meant business. They were well equipped to handle any disturbance that might impede the death march. One soldier carried an iron hammer in his right hand. And hanging from his leather belt was a rawhide sheath, with the heads of three iron spikes about nine inches long, sticking out of the top of the sheath. Another soldier carried a small, white banner on a tall pole, announcing to everyone the criminal charge against the prisoner.

First century Private Detective, Jake Jezreel has been thrown into a confusing investigation. Wealthy and well-connected Pharisees have hired the detective to track down a mysterious character they claim is “dangerous”. Their accusation stems from their assessment that the mystery man is forming an army of ravenous followers. They believe that this rebel leader wants to overthrow the Jewish government. Then, in succession, he and his army would topple the Roman strangle hold on Israel.
The Pharisees fear that such an insurrection would completely destabilize the country. The Romans would counter attack with devastating consequences.
Jake must figure out a way to defuse this volatile situation before it blows up in his face. And the heat in the investigative cauldron, stoked by the religious leaders, is boiling hotter and fierier.
Jake begins to realize that he has been swept up into the middle of a vicious blood-vengeance against the “rebel”. Jake is trapped in the middle. It is quite apparent that the religious leaders are demanding that he must do their bidding no matter what the cost. And Jake can feel their icy fingers clutching at him, forcing him.
But Jake is shocked by another startling fact, jumping out at him in the midst of his initial investigation. Tangled up in all the twists and turns of his fact-finding probe, the detective uncovers a disturbing truth. Flying in the face of everything he had ever been taught, Jake unearths indisputable evidence that there was not just one Adam. There were two! There was a Second Adam! How can he explain that to the religious leaders?
The religious leaders want results from their detective. They are squeezing him hard to deliver the incriminating facts they salivate for.
How can Jake reveal all the disturbing facts he has uncovered to the vengeful religious leaders. He’s discovered only good and marvelous evidence about the ‘rebel’. And now the undeniable truth that there actually was a Second Adam! What dire consequences will come crashing down upon Jake when he unloads his final report upon the religious leaders?
Only a shocking, unimaginable conclusion can answer that fearsome question.
About the Author
Donald Craig Miller has been writing Christian papers for local churches and newsletters for more than 50 years. In 2018, he launched his first in a series of Christian books based on a first century detective. His Christian writing is a result of attending a Billy Graham writing school in Minneapolis in 1971. This experience encouraged him to develop his already growing desire to write and redirect his desire toward glorifying the Lord Jesus Christ in his writings. Through the cooperation of pastors, he has been able to write for church newsletters and bulletin inserts for churches in the Dayton, Ohio area, and more recently in the Macon and Warner Robins, Georgia area. Miller also has been a Bible teacher for over 54 years, teaching in Sunday school and church settings, in home Bible studies, and as a lay preacher. He found Christ through The Navigators while stationed at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa. Not long after accepting Christ, Miller realized that God had gifted him with the gift of teaching. From then on, his great desire has been to dig scriptural truth from the Bible and pass it on to other Christians. Based on these years of teaching, the life of Christ has especially come alive for Miller. His desire is to translate his passion for the life of Christ into the lives of his readers.
